Senior Portraits With Flair

When a high school senior contacts me with an idea for an on-location concept shoot, she has my attention! I totally love the chance to be creative and artistic, and deliver images that express my subject’s unique spirit. Presenting Evelyn!

Evelyn is a senior at Canterbury School in Fort Myers.

She has a fierce, independent spirit, and a mind of her own. Evelyn wanted the chance to mark this milestone in her life with authentic portraits, true to who she is.

While she wasn’t interested in an elaborate day of shooting in multiple locations, she did want to take things outside the studio and try a few different looks. We decided to compromise by shooting in just one location—a very cool field near a barbed wire fence that I had previously scouted out—and really take our time with multiple outfits and changing makeup looks.

To begin with, the weather was not exactly cooperating. The skies were gray and didn’t seem likely to clear up. Shooting outdoors there are always some additional variables. Luckily, I come prepared! By setting up a couple of strobe lights, it actually allowed us to create some nice contrast and add dramatic punch to the shots. We made our own sun! Worked like a charm!

We started with a casual outfit, and added a sofa from Evelyn’s home. It’s always nice to add personal touches to client shoots. Evelyn and her mom just loved the laughing shots. It’s great fun to create and share images that make clients say: “That’s SO you!”

Next up, a flowing white dress.

When I first talked with Evelyn, she described herself as simple, no-fuss. But when I visited her home for the Style and Concept Consultation, her closet told a different tale.

Evelyn had some really lovely dresses and I knew the combination of a flowing dress, wind-in-the-hair, and a golden field would look incredible! By moving Evelyn around and helping her rock the poses, we really came up with some stunning images.

Finally, Evelyn changed into jeans, a white shirt, and her black leather biker jacket. This was the look that we had been waiting for! The style was made complete with the help of our amazing hair and makeup artist-- Scharle Pozadas of Bella Mariposa.

Evelyn, her mom and I were all excited to see Evelyn’s spirit shine with her edgy, classic-rebel look.

We got just the warm colors we were hoping for once the sun started to set. Mother nature plus strobe accents are a match made in heaven for this edgy look. Just the right kind of drama! I love seeing the barbed wire fence in the foreground. My jeans didn’t love the barbed wire quite as much. Climbing the fence I got a terrific snag in the knees of my pants. Oh well! Anything for the shot!

These examples are just a glimpse of the awesome shots we ended up taking. To ensure that Evelyn always remembers this time in her life, the best ones were compiled into an heirloom album with a combination of matted images and flushmount pages. My favorite part is the beautiful red leather binding, a custom selection that I know Evelyn will love!

Evelyn, it was wonderful meeting with you and chatting into the night around your dining room table. It’s truly inspiring to see a young lady with such a clear sense of herself and an independent spirit. You are ready to take on the world! Thank you for letting me capture your beauty and personality so you can share it with your friends and loved ones today, as well as your family of the future!
