Keeping it real: Natural newborn portraits

Brooke and Emilio like to keep it real.  They treated me like an old friend when I met them for the first time.  With a new baby at home, they didn't fuss to make the house immaculate.  And I like it like that! Brooke let her hair down and cuddled and nursed her brand new baby Brielle while we chatted.  Emilio did his best to keep their boundless and affectionate pups from licking me to death.  I was offered a comfy seat, a cool drink, and a heaping bowl of candy corn.  (LOVE!)  We talked about everything from the first day they met (at an art show-- so cool!),  to their fave bands (girl power for Brooke, anything and everything for Emilio), to their love of football (yup, hardcore fans right there.)

We agreed we wanted to have their newborn portraits match their relaxed, modern style.

I'm always looking for ways of showing real life, beautifully.  I was waiting for just the right couple to bite on an idea I'd been dreaming about-- a portrait of a new family all cozied up together in a big bed. The concept struck a chord with Brooke and Emilio... and the dogs too.

Capturing baby Brielle's many expressions was my favorite part of the day.

Isn't she beautiful?

Brooke shared with me that the rocking chair she nurses Brielle in has been passed down in her family.  I love honoring traditions and connections like this-- that's the magic of in-home custom portraiture afterall.  Emilio came to our rescue by transporting the chair up a flight of stairs for these natural light portraits.

As the two sat together, rocking in the beautiful light, I remembered my first week with my baby Veda.  A mom never forgets those still, quiet moments just gazing down at the fluttering eyelashes, the perfect pout that curls into a smile, the soft folds of delicate newborn skin.
